Bath Wastes & Bath Plugs

Bath wastes are the plumbing element (or plug) that sits in the drain hole of the bathtub. The waste feature prevents larger things like water from flowing through the drain hole and prevents drain blockages.

There Are Three Bath Waste Options Available

Standard Plug and Waste
The standard plug and waste simply act as a standard bath waste to provide the water somewhere to flow down to. To hold water in the bath, a cover for the waste is needed. This will generally be included when you purchase a standard waste.

Pop-Up Plugs

Pop-Up wastes sit flush when they are in the sealed position and proud when in the open or draining position.

The “plug” is screwed on to a plunger mechanism that is built into the centre of the outlet. The plug is actuated by pressing on the centre, engaging a ratchet mechanism to seal the plug or releasing to drain.

If the waste needs to be replaced, there needs to be access to the underside of the installation which is no problem for most basin installations but a much bigger issue for baths which are usually built in.

When bathing, particularly for small children, a wayward step can easily open the plug. Also, open pop-up wastes can also pose a tripping hazard.

Bath wastes encounter a variety of materials - hair, bath toys, jewellery etc - and the waste and plunger mechanism are therefore more prone to clogging and fouling. When clearing blockages and/or retrieving items, accessibility is more limited in a pop-up waste due to the fixed plunger mechanism in the centre of the waste outlet. If the waste ever needs to be replaced, access is required to both inside and underneath the vessel. This is commonly possible in a basin, but rarely in a bath.

The shape of pop-up plugs is often of a dome/mushroom shape. Available in all on-trend colours including chrome, matte black, brushed gold, brushed nickel, and gunmetal.

Pop-Down Plugs

Pop-Down wastes sit recessed when in the sealed position and flush when in the open or draining position.

The “plug” is screwed to a plunger mechanism that is part of a removable cartridge. The entire cartridge comes out for easy cleaning, removal of blockages or replacement. The fact that the plug is recessed when sealed and never proud also removes the unintended opening and tripping issues.

Are bath wastes a standard size?

Bath wastes, also known as bathtub drains, are not necessarily a standard size as they can vary depending by manufacturer and type of bathtub.

However, there are common metric sizes for bath wastes that are used by most manufacturers. The most common size for a bath waste is 40mm in diameter, but there are also other sizes such as 45mm and 50mm that are sometimes used.

It's important to note that the size of the bath waste is not the only consideration when replacing a drain. The type of drain, including whether it is a standard plug and waste, a pop-up or pop-down style, as well as the material of the drain, may also need to be taken into account.
