I often find inspiration in unexpected places like the colours in a vintage rug or the patina of an old brass pot. Often what inspires me and what is practical in my space are two different things. Our kitchen is in the middle of our home, and even though I would have loved to add more colour there, I chose to stick with neutrals because it connects with three other rooms and needed to be a place for a little bit of calm between all the surrounding colours. In my laundry, I didn’t have to consider any other spaces and I went all out with lots of colours and patterns. The inspiration for this entire space came from the blind fabric that I fell in love with.

In our kitchen, we used the Turner Hastings Novi double sink. We are a family of five and as much as I’d love to have a perfect kitchen all the time, we don’t - we often have dishes in the sink - so it is handy to have 2 sides so that the sink can be used even when there is something in the other side. I also love the look of the butler sink, it is quintessential to the country/farmhouse look I wanted, and the ribbed design adds texture and interest.

For the laundry, I chose the Turner Hastings Ravine sink. I love the look of the fireclay, & it is easy to clean and stays looking glossy, unlike stainless steel which can scratch and look dull quite quickly. I love the raised inset design and the fact that the tap is set into the sink. This brings me to the tap! I chose the Turner Hastings Clasico mixer in bronze. It is a traditional design in a beautiful gold finish with a white handle. I love the warmth that it adds to the laundry.

My top tip for renovating would be to be brave! We often choose the ‘safe’ option and then we end up with the same thing as everyone else. Give your space some personality by choosing a fun colour or playful patterns. Don’t be afraid to mix metals or choose unexpected combinations.

However, don’t overlook the functionality and practicality of the space just to make it look pretty. Think about the storage you need, how you will use the space, where you require lighting and power outlets, all of the things that will make your space a joy to use …. then choose your aesthetic features to make it beautiful.
