Telbix Lyric Indoor Lighting

A well-designed bathroom lighting scheme uses three types: ambient lighting (general illumination, such as a ceiling light or downlights), task lighting (focused light for grooming, typically beside or above the mirror), and accent lighting (decorative LED strips, feature pendants, or night lights). Relying on a single ceiling light is the most common lighting mistake in Australian bathrooms, it creates unflattering shadows on the face and leaves the room feeling flat.

In Australia, bathroom lighting must comply with AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards, which require specific IP (Ingress Protection) ratings based on the zone within the bathroom. Zone 1 (inside the shower or bath area) requires IP65 rated fixtures minimum. Zone 2 (within 0.6m of a bath or shower) requires IP44 minimum. Outside these zones, standard IP20 rated lights can be used. Always check the IP rating of any light fitting before installing it in or near a wet area.

For bathroom tasks like applying makeup or shaving, a colour temperature of 3000K–4000K (warm white to neutral white) is ideal as it renders skin tones naturally and accurately. Colour temperatures above 5000K (cool daylight) can appear harsh and clinical. If you want a relaxing, spa-like ambience, lean toward 2700K–3000K for a warm, flattering glow.

Yes, LED lighting is the standard choice for Australian bathrooms. LED lights offer significantly lower energy consumption, longer lifespan (up to 25,000 hours), and are available in a full range of colour temperatures and dimmer-compatible options. Look for LED lights from reputable brands like Eglo, Brilliant, and Martec (available at The Blue Space) that carry appropriate IP ratings for your intended installation zone.

In Australia, all electrical work including the installation of new light fittings must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Replacing a like-for-like fitting in the same location may be a grey area in some states, but for any new circuits, new switch positions, or wet area installations, a licensed electrician is required by law. Always obtain the appropriate Certificate of Compliance from your electrician after installation.
