Oakbank Reno: The Ensuite Reveal

Oakbank Reno: The Ensuite Reveal

"Chanice and Spencer have such a natural eye for design. They don't follow trends, they build spaces that feel considered, warm and completely their own. This ensuite is one of my favourite collaborations we've done, it's proof that patience and good materials always win." — Kate Hancock, The Blue Space

For four years, Chanice and Spencer from @oakbankreno have been transforming their Adelaide Hills home one project at a time, turning a dated kitchen, living and dining zone into a stunning new ensuite and walk-in robe. It's been a true labour of love, and one that came with a setback nobody plans for.

Partway through the build, a house fire brought everything to a halt. Months of uncertainty, insurance claims and waiting followed before Chanice and Spencer could pick the project back up and start again. What's landed on the other side of that is a space that feels calm, tactile and completely worth the wait, and we're proud to have been part of it.

Starting Over, Better

Starting Over, Better

Redoing a slab and re-running plumbing is hard enough the first time around, let alone a second. But rebuilding gave Chanice and Spencer the chance to lock in a layout and material palette they were completely sure of, rather than rushing early decisions.

The result leans into a relaxed, tropical villa feel: timber ceilings, skylights for natural light, and a mix of textures that all work together rather than competing. It's a great reminder that a forced pause on a renovation doesn't have to mean a compromised outcome. Sometimes it means a better one.

Natural Materials, Front and Centre

The star of the ensuite is a natural stone feature wall paired with hand-applied microcement, giving the whole room a soft, textural finish that plays beautifully with light. Timber ceiling battens and warm stone tones bring in that tropical, holiday-at-home atmosphere Chanice and Spencer were chasing.

True to their DIY roots, the couple even created their own custom terrazzo vanity top rather than sourcing one off the shelf, a detail that gives the space a one-of-a-kind finish you simply can't buy. It's the kind of hands-on thinking that's made their renovation journey so compelling to follow.

A Vanity Built for the Space

Anchoring the room is an ADP Waverley vanity in a rich Florentine walnut, custom-built to suit the ensuite's layout with a flat edge on one side and a curved edge on the other. Paired with the terrazzo top Chanice and Spencer made themselves, it strikes that balance of practical storage and individual style that makes a small ensuite feel considered rather than squeezed in.

Above it sits an Ingrain Ash Horizontal Pill shaving cabinet, adding extra storage without interrupting the room's soft, rounded lines, alongside a round mirror framed against the stone feature wall.

Brushed Nickel, Head to Toe

Every piece of hardware in the space is Meir in Brushed Nickel, chosen to complement the warmth of the timber and stone rather than fight against it. That includes a heated towel rail, guest towel rail, Curvae double robe hook and round toilet roll holder, all working together for a cohesive, considered finish.

On the shower side, a round wall mixer and 200mm curved wall spout pair with a gooseneck shower set featuring a 300mm rose and three-function hand shower, tucked behind an arched fluted glass shower screen. It's a soft, rounded silhouette that suits the room's relaxed, villa-like feel perfectly.

Comfort That Doesn't Show

Underneath it all, Thermogroup underfloor heating keeps the space warm from the ground up, the kind of detail you don't see in photos but feel every time you step in. Paired with the natural materials overhead, it rounds out an ensuite that's as comfortable to live in as it is beautiful to look at.

We loved being part of this one from start to finish, fire, delays and all. Follow along with Chanice and Spencer's renovation journey @oakbankreno for more.
