Bathroom Basins Buying Guide
This collection brings together every bathroom basin in the range, from compact hand basins for a powder room to wide pill and rectangle bowls for a main bathroom vanity. You will find Caroma, Bao, ADP, Timberline and Clark basins in ceramic, fine fireclay, concrete, stone composite and solid surface. Start with how the basin mounts, then narrow by size, shape and finish.
What types of bathroom basin are there?
There are six main types, defined by how the basin meets the bench or wall. Above counter basins sit on top of the bench. Inset basins drop into a cut-out and rest on a rim. Undermount basins fix beneath a stone or solid surface top. Semi recessed basins sit partly in the vanity and overhang the front edge. Wall hung basins fix to the wall, and freestanding basins stand on the floor as a single piece, like the Caroma Contura II 530mm freestanding basin.
Is a basin the same as a bathroom sink?
Yes. In Australia the bowl in the bathroom is usually called a basin, while "sink" tends to mean the kitchen or laundry bowl. The vanity is the whole unit: cabinet, top and basin together. Many Caroma basins, such as the Liano II round and pill models, are made to work as either an under counter or over counter basin, so the type name describes the fitting, not the product itself.
What size basin do I need?
Match the basin to the vanity and the room. A small ensuite or powder room suits a bowl of 300 to 400mm, such as the Bao Classic 310mm or Bao Round 360mm. A main bathroom vanity usually takes a basin of 450 to 600mm, such as the Bao Pill 500mm or the Caroma Liano II 580mm pill basin. Leave room on the bench for the tap and for soap, and check the basin depth against the cabinet depth before you order.
Do bathroom basins come with tap holes?
It depends on the model. Most above counter and undermount basins have no tap hole, so the mixer goes on the bench or the wall. Wall hung and inset basins are offered with no tap hole, one tap hole for a mixer, or three for a three-piece set. The Caroma Luna inset basin, for example, comes without a tap landing. Choose the basin and the tap together so the spout reaches the centre of the bowl.
Which basin material is easiest to look after?
Vitreous china and fine fireclay are the easiest to keep clean, because the glaze is hard and non-porous. Solid surface basins, like the ADP Glory, are smooth and can be lightly buffed if marked. Concrete and stone composite basins have a natural, textured look but need a sealer and a gentle, pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads on any matte finish.
Matte or gloss: which finish should I choose?
Gloss white reflects light and wipes clean quickly, which suits a busy family bathroom. Matte white has a soft, modern look and hides water spots well, though it can show marks from metal objects that are easy to buff out. For colour, there are options such as the Bao Round 370mm in matte white and dark green, or the Bao Round 400mm in Ochre Veins.
Completing the room
Once the basin is chosen, pair it with a basin mixer or tall basin mixer, a matching basin waste and a vanity from bathroom vanities and furniture. The Blue Space team can help you check fit before you order.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an above counter basin?
An above counter basin (also called an above bench or vessel basin) sits on top of the vanity benchtop rather than being inset into it. The full exterior of the basin is visible, making it a strong design statement. Above counter basins are available in ceramic, stone, concrete, and composite materials in a range of shapes, round, oval, rectangular, and sculpted forms.
What is an inset basin?
An inset basin (also called a top-mount or drop-in basin) drops into a pre-cut hole in the benchtop, with the rim of the basin sitting on top of the benchtop surface. This is one of the most common basin installation types in Australian bathrooms and suits a wide range of vanity styles. Inset basins are practical, secure, and easy to replace without changing the benchtop.
What is a wall hung basin?
A wall hung basin is fixed directly to the wall with no vanity cabinet below, it is cantilevered off the wall with the waste pipe running up the wall or through the wall behind. Wall hung basins give a bathroom a very open, spacious feel and are popular in powder rooms, compact ensuites, and contemporary minimalist bathrooms.
What is an undercounter basin?
An undercounter basin (also called undermount basin) is installed below the benchtop surface, with the benchtop material cut to the basin opening and the basin bonded underneath. This creates a seamless, flush benchtop with no rim or lip, water and mess can be wiped directly from the benchtop surface into the basin.
What is a freestanding basin?
A freestanding basin is a basin unit mounted on a pedestal, column, or exposed stand that supports it from below, with no wall cabinet or vanity behind it. The plumbing may be exposed (as a design feature) or partially concealed within the pedestal. Freestanding basins are a statement piece, often used in powder rooms or feature bathrooms where design impact takes priority.
What is a semi-recessed basin?
A semi-recessed basin sits partially into the benchtop (or vanity top), with the front portion of the basin protruding beyond the front edge of the cabinet. This allows for a shallower vanity cabinet (often 350 – 400mm deep instead of the standard 450 – 550mm) while still providing a practical basin size. Semi-recessed basins are ideal for narrow bathrooms where depth is at a premium.
What size basin waste do I need?
Most Australian basins require a 32mm or 40mm diameter basin waste. The basin manufacturer's specifications will confirm the correct size. Ensure the thread size (typically 1¼" or 1½") matches your trap and waste pipe connection. Always check the waste specifications of your basin before ordering.
How do I know which basin mixer is right for my basin type?
The key factor is the height and style of your basin. For standard inset or semi-recessed basins, a regular deck-mounted basin mixer with a spout height of around 100–140mm works well. However, if you have an above-counter or vessel basin, where the bowl sits on top of the benchtop, you will need a tall basin mixer with a spout height of 180mm or more, otherwise the spout will sit below the basin rim and water will splash onto the benchtop. Wall-mounted mixers offer another option for above-counter basins, with the height controlled by your rough-in position. Always confirm basin rim height before purchasing your tapware.
What is the best type of basin for a bathroom?
There isn't one best type, it depends on the bathroom and how it's used. A busy family bathroom usually suits an inset basin on a full vanity for storage and durability, while a powder room or compact ensuite often suits a wall hung basin for the open floor space it leaves. If the basin is meant to be a design feature rather than blend in, an above counter basin is the usual choice. Start from how the room is used, then narrow down by mounting type.
What's the difference between a bathroom basin and a bathroom sink?
They're the same fixture, "basin" is the more common Australian term and "sink" is used more in the US and in general conversation, but tapware, plumbing and retail listings use them interchangeably. Some people use "sink" for the kitchen and "basin" for the bathroom specifically, though this isn't a strict rule. When browsing, it's worth searching both terms since some products are listed under one or the other.
What are the different ways a basin can be mounted?
The main mounting types are inset (dropped into a cut hole in the benchtop, the most common), semi-recessed (partially built in with the front overhanging the cabinet), above-counter (sitting fully on top of the bench) and wall hung (fixed to the wall with no cabinet underneath at all). Each has a different benchtop or wall preparation requirement, so it's worth deciding on mounting type before choosing a size or shape.
What materials are bathroom basins made from?
Vitreous china (ceramic) is the most common, it's durable, easy to clean and available in the widest range of shapes and sizes. Engineered stone and solid surface basins can be matched closely to the benchtop material for a more continuous look. Concrete basins have a raw, textured finish that suits an industrial or organic design direction but need sealing to resist staining. Material choice affects both look and maintenance, so it's worth matching it to how much upkeep the household is realistically going to do.
How do I choose the right size basin for my bathroom?
Start with the vanity or wall space available, then check the basin's footprint against it with room left for tapware and any splashback. A powder room or small ensuite typically suits a compact basin under 450mm, while a main family bathroom has more flexibility. Depth matters as much as width, particularly for wall hung and semi-recessed types where a shallower basin can free up floor space.
Does the basin waste and trap need to match a specific basin?
The waste needs to match the basin's outlet size, most Australian basins take a 32mm or 40mm waste, and the trap and pipework need to connect correctly to the wall or floor plumbing. This is a job for a licensed plumber, since getting the connection wrong risks leaks. If you're also choosing tapware, spout height should be checked against the basin's rim height, this matters most for above counter basins since a standard-height mixer won't clear a raised bowl.
