The toilets on this page, by type

This page lists back to wall and close coupled suites with a visible cistern, suites with a concealed cistern, and bidet suites, from Caroma, Bao, Indigo and Fienza. The quickest way to narrow them down is by cistern type, then by what your plumbing allows. Check the existing outlet and inlet before you choose. A floor outlet takes an S trap, and a wall outlet takes a P trap. The listings that say universal trap fit either. The main toilets guide explains set out, inlet and projection in more detail. The suites that give a WELS rating are 4 star at 4.5 and 3 litres per flush.

Visible cistern suites

The Caroma Luna suites have a 395mm pan height and a 805mm overall height. The Luna Cleanflush lists an S trap set out of 60 to 205mm. The Urbane II Cleanflush suite has a 440mm pan height, a 655mm projection and an S trap set out of 60 to 200mm, with a back or bottom inlet. The Riviere Cleanflush close coupled suite has a 435mm pan height, a 660mm projection and an 870mm overall height. The Fienza RAK Washington close coupled suite has a 400mm pan height and a 705mm projection, an S trap set out of 240mm, a P trap set out of 190mm and a bottom inlet on the left or right. See back to wall toilets and close coupled toilets for each style, and Caroma toilets and RAK toilets for the full ranges.

The Bao and Indigo suites are universal rimless suites with a universal trap. The Bao Elegant has a 410mm pan height, a 640mm projection and a set out of 100 to 200mm, with a raised height version at 440mm and 670mm. The Indigo Cali has a 410mm pan height and a 620mm projection. The Indigo Cali II raised height has a 450mm pan height and a 675mm projection, and the Indigo Ridge has a 410mm pan height and a 665mm projection. See Bao toilet suites and Indigo toilets, and rimless toilets for how rimless bowls differ.

Concealed cistern suites

The Caroma Invisi Series II suites hide the cistern in the wall, so they need an in-wall setup. The Urbane II suite has a 449mm pan height and an S trap set out of 60 to 120mm. The Urbane II Compact has a 500mm projection and a back inlet only. The Luna Cleanflush Invisi Series II suites have a 395mm pan height, a 610mm projection and an S trap set out of 60 to 160mm. The Contura II suite has a 440mm pan height, a 570mm projection and a set out of 60 to 200mm. Read in wall concealed toilets before you choose one.

Set out ranges across the Caroma sheets on this page

The set out range decides which suites can use your existing waste, so it is worth setting the figures from the sheets side by side. All are for the Uni-Orbital connector, which moves up to 50mm sideways. The Luna Cleanflush wall faced pan lists 60mm to 205mm and the older Luna wall faced pan lists 60mm to 185mm, both with 140mm recommended. The Urbane II Cleanflush wall faced pan lists 60mm to 200mm with 140mm recommended. The Luna Cleanflush Invisi II suite, whose sheet is revision 3 dated June 2020, lists 60mm to 160mm with 140mm recommended. The Urbane II Invisi suites list 60mm to 120mm with 90mm recommended, and the Urbane II bidet close coupled pan lists 60mm to 245mm with 140mm recommended.

The pattern is that a wall faced close coupled pan accepts a long range, and an Invisi II suite accepts a shorter one. If your waste sits well out from the wall, the close coupled suites will suit it. If it sits close to the wall, the Invisi suites will. Always measure from the finished wall, as the toilets guide explains, and check the number against the sheet for the exact code.

Framing numbers for the Invisi II suites

The Luna Cleanflush Invisi II sheet gives the numbers a builder needs. It shows a frame of 400mm to 420mm and a minimum of 90mm for the cavity. The wall thickness runs from 6mm to 45mm. The sheet gives a maximum of 45mm for top push buttons, a minimum of 90mm for front button installation and 100mm for top button installation, and a minimum of 55mm under the noggin. The adjustable flush pipe can be raised by up to 25mm to suit tiling height variations.

The sheet also says access to the cistern internals can be had through either a front mount or top mount button plate, and that with front mount buttons the seat will partly cover the push button. The pan, the cistern and the access plate are separate parts, and the plate and buttons are supplied separately, so the choice of plate comes with the choice of suite. The Luna suite comes with the Xena soft close quick release thermoset seat.

Urbane II Luxe close coupled and the seat height figure

The sheet for the Urbane II Luxe close coupled suite is headed as a sanitary compartment for ambulant applications and says the suite is suitable for installation to comply with AS 1428.1-2021 Amendment 1. It gives an overall height of about 845mm and a pan height of 440mm, and it states that the top of the seat should sit between 460mm and 480mm above the finished floor, adjusted through the bedding height. It also gives a set out range of 60mm to 200mm with 140mm recommended, and an inVogue soft close quick release seat with stainless steel caps. For a household, that seat height figure is a useful target. For a compartment that has to comply, follow the standard itself.

Bidet suites and raised height pans

There are two Urbane II bidet suites, one close coupled and one with the concealed cistern. Both have an electronic bidet seat, and smart toilets and bidets covers that style. Raised pan heights on this page include 440mm on the Urbane II and the Bao Elegant raised height, and 450mm on the Indigo Cali II. If you need a taller seat height, accessible toilets covers the wider fit-out.

The bidet close coupled pan

The plumbers' instructions for the Urbane II bidet wall faced close coupled pan, issue 0 dated 24 March 2023, give a recommended S trap set out of 140mm from the finished wall and a range of 60mm to 245mm. They show a pan height of 440mm. A G 3/8 flexible hose to the bidet seat is supplied. For a bottom inlet cistern, a G 1/2 elbow flexible hose to the cistern inlet valve is not supplied. The cistern instructions, issue 0 dated 20 March 2023, repeat that the cistern must be matched with a compatible pan from the same range for the 4 star rating, and they say the inlet valve can be changed from left to right.

The roughing in needs a power conduit as well as a water point. The drawing shows a half inch BSP nipple, a 32mm conduit location for the power cord at 275mm, and a back entry connection for the cistern. Plan the conduit and the power point before the wall is lined, because a bidet seat without power is an ordinary seat.

What the bidet seat manual says

The Urbane II electronic bidet seat has a 24 page user manual dated 9 December 2024, with a technical specification that is more detailed than the listing. It lists rear wash, female wash and massage functions, with water temperature, flow rate and spray position each adjustable in five steps, and air drying with adjustable air rate and dryer temperature. It lists a heated seat, a deodoriser, automatic and manual nozzle cleaning, a descaling function, a display screen, a remote control, a night light and automatic opening of the cover and seat.

The numbers are specific. The wash water temperature runs from 31 to 39 degrees Celsius, the flow rate from 350 to 650 millilitres a minute and the wash cycle is 3 minutes. The warm air runs from 35 to 50 degrees and the dry cycle is 3 minutes. The seat temperature runs from 29 to 37 degrees. The water tank holds 800 millilitres with a 1200 watt heater, and the deodoriser runs for 15 minutes. The unit is rated at AC 220 to 240 volts, 50 or 60 hertz, 1200 watts, and its protection degree is IPX4.

The safety lines are worth reading. The manual lists thermal cutoff fuses, a liquid backflow prevention air gap of the AB type, and residual current devices. The remote control uses two CR2032 batteries, which are not supplied, and the manual says to replace them when the user light flashes continuously. It lists a water supply connector of G 3/8 on the unit with a G 1/2 flexible hose.

Supply pressure and temperature limits

The manual gives a water supply pressure of 70kPa to 750kPa, a supply temperature of 4 to 35 degrees and an ambient temperature of 4 to 40 degrees. That pressure range is narrower than the cistern's. The Caroma cistern instructions say the inlet valves are suitable for dynamic flow pressures of 30kPa to 1000kPa. So a house with low pressure, or a very high pressure main, can suit the cistern and still fall outside what the bidet seat accepts. Ask the plumber to measure the pressure at the house, and fit a pressure limiting valve if the plumber advises one.

There is also a small difference between documents. The bidet pan instructions say the seat comes with a 1.5 metre plug in power cord with an IP65 rated connector, while the manual lists a power cord length of 1.8 metres. Both are the maker's documents. Ask which applies to the seat supplied, and plan the power point within reach of the shorter figure.

Looking after a bidet seat

The Caroma seat manual lists nozzle cleaning, both automatic and manual, a descaling function, and a deodoriser that lists a diatom deodorisation mode. The manual has a care and maintenance section that covers descaling. Ask the supplier for the descaling procedure and how often it should be done for your water. The remote control takes two CR2032 batteries, not supplied, and the user light flashes continuously when they need replacing. The troubleshooting table starts with the plain checks: if the seat is not washing, the power may be off or the water supply may be closed. Follow the manual for the seat itself. The pan needs only warm water and mild soap, as the other Caroma documents say.

Backflow protection and who does the work

A web search for electronic bidet seat installation in Australia found manuals for several seats sold here, and they consistently call for backflow protection on the water supply. One warns that the seat must be installed with backflow protection conforming to the National Construction Code, Volume 3. Another says the Plumbing Code of Australia requires a high hazard backflow prevention device, not supplied with that seat. Some seats carry their own protection. The St George Byron sheet says its toilet has an integrated atmospheric vacuum breaker that meets the high hazard criteria of AS/NZS 3500.1, and the Caroma seat manual lists a liquid backflow prevention air gap of the AB type. The Caroma installation guide for the seat shows a dual check valve in the water inlet kit.

No source found says whether a given arrangement satisfies the code in a given state, so that is a question for the plumber and for the local authority. The search results also said manufacturers tell buyers to check local requirements, since authorities may vary. The same manuals say the water connection must be made by a licensed plumber to AS/NZS 3500 and the National Construction Code, and one manual says a licensed electrician must install the product to AS/NZS 3000. No source was found for the rules on where a power point may sit in a bathroom, and one retailer's figure of about 1.2 metres from the toilet could not be confirmed against the standard, so ask the electrician. Plan the position with them before the wall is lined.

Where the bidet comes from

The Wikipedia article on the bidet says it likely began with French furniture makers in the late 17th century, with the earliest written reference from France in 1710 and the next from Italy in 1726. Plumbing improvements had moved the bidet from the bedroom to the bathroom by 1900, it says. It dates the first commercial electronic bidet toilet to 1967 in Japan, with a warm water spray and drying, a heated seat added in 1976, and a first Washlet developed between 1978 and 1980. The article reports that the Washlet was in roughly three quarters of Japanese households as of 2015, a figure it flags as needing an update.

The same article makes health and water claims, with caveats. Hygiene is improved with toilet paper plus a bidet compared with paper alone, it says, and an average person uses about half a litre of water for bidet cleansing. Warm water bidets may harbour microbes if not properly disinfected, and the claims about haemorrhoids and urogenital infections rest on a one year web survey. The whole article is flagged for needing more citations, so read those statements as background and not as a reason to buy.

Bao and Indigo documents

The Bao and Indigo specification sheets and installation guides linked from their listings are image files with no readable text, so the Bao and Indigo figures on this page come from the listings. Ask the supplier for the sheets in a readable form and check the set out, pan height and projection against them before the plumber starts.

What comes in the box

The Bao suites ship in two boxes: the pan with a slim seat and cover, a pan connector and instructions, and the ceramic cistern with a universal inlet valve, a flush valve and rectangular chrome dual flush buttons. The Indigo suites list a pan, a cistern with chrome dual flush buttons and a soft close quick release seat, and the Cali II also includes a vario bend. The Fienza RAK Washington lists the pan with concealed floor fixing screws, a ceramic cistern with a round dual flush button and a soft close seat. The Riviere lists the suite, a seat, a fixing kit and installation instructions. The Caroma suites list their cistern, seat and fixings, and the concealed cistern suites list the Invisi Series II cistern.

Questions to ask about these toilets

Ask which set out range applies to the exact Luna code, since the wall faced sheet says 185mm, the Cleanflush sheet 205mm and the Invisi sheet 160mm. Ask which power cord length comes with the bidet seat, and what plate and buttons come with each Invisi II suite. Ask the plumber to measure the water pressure and to confirm the waste and power positions before the order is placed. Ask the plumber and the local authority which backflow arrangement the bidet seat needs, and whether the dual check valve in the Caroma kit is enough or a separate device is required. Ask the electrician where the power point may sit and whether a new circuit is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wall faced toilet?

A wall faced toilet (also called a close-coupled toilet suite) features a cistern that sits directly on top of and flush against the rear of the toilet pan, creating a seamless back panel. The back of the unit sits flat against the wall, giving a cleaner look than older exposed-plumbing models. Wall faced toilets are the most common toilet suite type sold in Australia and suit both modern and traditional bathrooms.

What is a rimless toilet and why does it matter?

A rimless toilet has no enclosed channel under the bowl's lip. Traditional rimmed toilets have a hidden channel that water flows through during flushing, this is hard to clean and can harbour bacteria and limescale. A rimless bowl flushes water directly across the surface instead, making it easier to keep hygienic.

What's the difference between a wall-faced, wall-hung and behind-the-wall toilet?

A wall-faced (close-coupled) toilet has the cistern sitting on top of and against the pan, with both visible. A behind-the-wall (in-wall/concealed) toilet hides the cistern inside the wall cavity, leaving only the pan and a flush plate visible. A wall-hung toilet goes further again, mounting the pan itself off the floor for a fully floating look.

How does an in-wall toilet cistern work?

The cistern is housed in a pre-fabricated in-wall frame (called a carrier frame or in-wall system), which is installed by a plumber before the wall is tiled or sheeted. The flush button on the wall face connects via a pneumatic or mechanical system to the cistern inside the wall. Brands like Geberit are the industry standard for in-wall frames in Australia, known for their reliability and long service life.

Are behind-the-wall toilets harder to maintain than standard toilets?

Modern in-wall cistern systems are designed for ease of maintenance. Most allow access to the cistern via the flush plate itself, which can be removed without breaking tiles, the Geberit Sigma and similar systems include access panels specifically for this purpose.

What is a smart toilet and what features does it have?

A smart toilet combines a toilet and bidet in one unit, typically featuring a heated seat, warm water rear wash, front wash, air drying, deodoriser, and often auto-open/close lid, nightlight, and remote or touch control. Some models include self-cleaning nozzles, eco flush modes, and Bluetooth connectivity. Smart toilets are increasingly popular in Australian bathrooms as awareness of bidet hygiene benefits grows.

What is the difference between a bidet seat and a smart toilet?

A bidet seat (or bidet toilet seat) is a retrofit unit that replaces your existing toilet seat and adds wash functions, whereas a smart toilet is a complete, fully integrated toilet suite with all features built in. A bidet seat is a more cost-effective upgrade if your existing toilet is in good condition. A full smart toilet suite offers a more seamless design and typically a wider range of features.
