Martec Striker Bathroom Heater Exhaust Fan with LED Buying Guide
The Martec Striker is a 3-in-1 ceiling unit that combines an exhaust fan, an LED downlight and four infrared heat lamps in one fitting. The version here is the Striker 4 Heat in white, suited to family bathrooms and ensuites that need warmth in winter as well as steam extraction all year.
What is a 3-in-1 bathroom heater?
A 3-in-1 unit does the work of three separate fittings: it extracts moist air, lights the room and heats it. On the Striker, four 275 watt infrared lamps give instant warmth, a half heat function runs only part of the lamps for smaller rooms, and a 12 watt R80 LED lamp of 1,200 lumens provides the light. The LED has adjustable colour temperature, is replaceable and is not dimmable.
Is the Striker powerful enough for my bathroom?
The Striker extracts up to 360 cubic metres of air an hour at under 40 decibels. A bathroom with a shower generally needs around 15 air changes an hour, so the Striker covers a room of about 24 cubic metres, roughly 3 x 3.2 metres with a 2.5 metre ceiling. Smaller ensuites have plenty of capacity to spare, which helps make up for bends in the duct. A fan can only extract air if replacement air can get in, so leave a gap under the door or a vent.
What size cut-out and duct does it need?
The unit measures 369mm square with an overall height of 269mm. It needs a ceiling cut-out of 320 x 320mm and at least 200mm of depth above the ceiling line, and a cut-out template is included. It takes a 125mm duct, and the box includes a 1.5 metre duct, two duct clips, an external grille and a back draft stopper. Keep the duct run short and as straight as possible, and vent it to the outside.
Can it go above the shower?
The Striker is rated IPX4, which means it is protected against splashing water. The zone directly above a shower has its own requirements under AS/NZS 3000, so your electrician should confirm where the unit can sit. As a rule, place it near the shower rather than directly over it.
How is the Striker controlled and installed?
A three-gang wall switch comes in the box, so the fan, light and heat each run separately. The Martec bathroom remote MBHREM is compatible but sold separately, so decide on the switch or the remote before wiring. The Striker is hardwired and must be installed by a licensed electrician. It has no built-in timer or humidity sensor, so ask your electrician about a timer switch if you want the fan to run on automatically.
How long should I run it, and how do I clean it?
Run the fan during your shower and for at least 15 minutes afterwards to clear the steam, which helps prevent condensation and mould. Turn the power off, then wipe or vacuum the grille every few months, since dust on the grille reduces airflow. Clean the fan itself at least twice a year and let everything dry fully before switching back on.
