Wall Basin/Bath Mixer Set

A wall mixer is a tap where the mixing valve and spout are mounted directly into the wall rather than sitting on the benchtop or bath deck, water supply lines run inside the wall cavity to the fitting. A wall basin and bath mixer set pairs coordinated wall-mounted fittings for both the basin and the bath, so the two taps share the same design and finish across the room, run from wall plumbing rather than deck penetrations at either fixture.

The terms are often used loosely, but "sink mixer" typically refers to a kitchen or laundry mixer designed for a sink, generally rated for a higher flow rate and taller spout clearance to fit pots and buckets underneath. A "basin mixer" is sized and rated for a bathroom hand basin, lower flow, shorter spout reach. They're not interchangeable: fitting a sink mixer over a basin is usually oversized and impractical, and a basin mixer won't deliver adequate flow for kitchen or laundry use.

Because the mixer is set into the wall rather than the benchtop, the outlet height needs to be planned relative to the basin rim during rough-in, before tiling, not adjusted afterward. A common guide is to position the spout outlet roughly 180-200mm above the basin rim, enough clearance to wash hands comfortably without excessive splash, but always confirm against the specific mixer's spout projection and your basin's exact rim height, since basin depth varies by model.

A wall mixer keeps the benchtop and bath deck completely clear of any fittings, which gives a cleaner, more minimal look and makes the benchtop or bath ledge easier to wipe down, since there's no tap base to clean around. It suits above-counter or vessel basins particularly well, since a deck-mounted mixer on a vessel basin often needs a very tall spout to clear the bowl, whereas a wall mixer's height is set independently of the basin's profile.

Because the plumbing sits inside the wall, the rough-in position for both the water inlets and the mixer body has to be finalised before the wall is closed up and tiled, unlike a deck-mounted tap, which can be swapped later with far less disruption. This means confirming your exact basin and bath model, and therefore the outlet height and spacing needed, at the framing and rough-in stage of a renovation, not after tiling is complete. A licensed plumber should set out and confirm this rough-in position early in the project.

It's possible but more involved than replacing a deck-mounted tap, since it usually requires opening the wall to access or reroute plumbing, plus retiling the affected section. For a full renovation where the wall is already being opened up, it adds little extra work, for a simple tap swap in an otherwise finished bathroom, a deck-mounted replacement is the more practical and lower-cost option.
