What a Meir gooseneck set is

A gooseneck set is a wall rail with a curved neck that carries an overhead rose, plus a hand shower on the same rail, with a diverter that switches the water between the two. This collection holds the Meir version. The retailer guides that explain the shape describe a gooseneck as a curved, S-shaped arm that holds the head. Here the curve sits at the top of the rail, so the rose reaches out over the shower floor and the hand shower stays at hand height below it.

The range is one design with four choices: a 200 mm or a 300 mm rose, and a single-function or a three-function hand shower, each in six finishes. What matters first is which of those suits your wall. The checks that decide a purchase are the water inlet, the reach, the mixer, the height, the flow and the care. For the whole brand, see Meir showers. For the wider guides, see shower on rails and double shower heads.

How the set is built

  • The rail is solid brass, with a gooseneck curve at the top and fixing points 650 mm apart.
  • The overhead rose is 200 mm or 300 mm across and 10 mm thick, not counting the nozzles.
  • The hand shower sits in an adjustable holder on the rail, with a flexible hose.
  • The diverter is built in, so you switch between the overhead rose and the hand shower at the rail.
  • A 68 mm threaded adapter is included in the box.

Everything above comes in the one box. A comparable gooseneck rail from another maker describes the same arrangement, with a diverter cartridge on the rail that switches between the rain head and the handheld sprayer. The hand shower is the part that makes the set useful for a family, because it reaches children, pets and the shower floor.

The water inlet: top or bottom

This is the point to settle first. The Meir listings describe a universal water inlet with a half inch female thread, which accepts either a top or a bottom water connection. The maker's product page says it suits both new and existing homes. So the same rail fits a wall where the water comes in from above and a wall where it comes in from below, and you do not need to choose a different product for each.

Tell the plumber which connection you want before the rail goes on. A rail that takes water through the top or the bottom leg changes where the supply pipe ends and where the mixer sits. If you are replacing an existing rail, note where the old one connects and reuse that position, since it keeps the plumbing work small.

The rose: 200 mm or 300 mm

The 200 mm rose is the compact choice and the 300 mm rose is the large rain-style head. Both are 10 mm thick, excluding the nozzles, and both are brass. The 200 mm sets project 452 mm from the wall and the 300 mm sets project 502 mm. The arm reach is 352 mm in both. A plumbing guide puts wall arm projection at 300 to 400 mm for a normal arm, so a rail set sits a little further out than a plain arm, which is the point of the gooseneck.

Guides put round fixed heads at 200 to 300 mm, with 150 to 200 mm for low-pressure systems, and say to avoid heads over 250 mm on low pressure unless a pump is fitted. So choose the 200 mm rose where pressure is modest or the enclosure is small, and the 300 mm rose where the supply is strong and the enclosure is roomy. More nozzles share the same flow on a larger face, so each stream is gentler rather than stronger. For the large flat heads from every maker, see rain showers.

The hand shower: single or three functions

The single-function hand shower gives one spray pattern. The three-function hand shower gives three spray options, which suits rinsing, targeted cleaning and a gentler wash. The overhead rose is a single function in both versions. Both hand showers are rated 3 star at 9 litres per minute, and the overhead is rated 3 star at 9 litres per minute too.

Choose the single function for simplicity and the three function when the hand shower does more than rinse. A cleaning job in the shower, or a child to wash, is the case for three. For other hand pieces, see hand held shower heads.

The mixer or taps are separate

The box lists the combination rail with the overhead, a fixing kit and the installation instructions. A mixer or taps are not in that list, so treat them as a separate purchase. A comparable gooseneck rail from another maker states the same point and names the compatible options: a single wall mixer, a progressive mixer, cross taps and round taps. The rail needs one of them to control the water, and the diverter then chooses where it goes.

Pick the mixer and the rail together, in the same finish, and settle the outlet height with the plumber at rough-in. For the options, see shower mixers.

Gooseneck arm or gooseneck rail set

Searchers often use the two terms for different products. A gooseneck arm is a curved wall arm that holds a head. A retailer guide says it raises the head and brings it further into the shower space, adds height without structural plumbing changes when the outlet is low, and fits with a thread-on connection. A gooseneck rail set, which is this collection, is the whole rail with the rose and the hand shower, and it has its own water inlet and diverter.

If you want only the arm to lift a head you already own, see shower arms. If you want the overhead rose and the hand shower in one product, this collection is the one. The set also takes more wall, because a rail with fixing points 650 mm apart needs a clear run of wall, and a gooseneck arm needs only an outlet.

Who a rail set suits

A retailer guide describes a rail shower as a head that can be raised or lowered along a vertical bar, with the height set to each user's preference, which suits a household with people of different heights. It says the head can come off the rail for rinsing, washing pets or cleaning the shower area, and that the height can be changed without reaching overhead, which helps people with mobility issues. A plumbing guide makes the same point, that a rail with a hand shower suits small children or anyone who finds a fixed head hard to use.

A gooseneck set adds the fixed overhead rose to that arrangement. So the one rail gives the fixed rose for a full wash, and the hand shower for everything else. The guide adds that a rail typically needs only simple wall fixtures, although the water connection behind it is plumbing work, as the fitting section below sets out.

Rail set or a fixed head

The plumbing guide lists the options. A fixed overhead head is the simplest. A rail-mounted hand shower is the flexible one. A twin rail adds a fixed head to a rail head. A wall mixer with a diverter feeds an overhead and a handheld from one control. This collection is the last two joined: the diverter is on the rail, and the mixer sits beneath it.

Pick a fixed head when one person showers and the wall is small. Select a gooseneck set when the household differs in height, when children or pets are washed in the shower, or when the shower needs cleaning often. Those are the cases where the hand shower earns its place.

The hose

A retailer page for the Meir combination rail states a flexible 1.5 m hose in a matching finish. Check that length against the size of your enclosure before you buy, since the hose has to reach the far corner from the holder position.

Reading the WELS number

The Meir datasheets for the rail sets give 3 star WELS at 9 litres per minute (flow rate 9 litres per minute at 3 bar), solid brass construction, a 68 mm long half inch threaded adapter and Watermark licence WMK25965 to AS/NZS 3718. The WELS registration line on those sheets reads TBC, so the sheet cannot supply the number. The listings in this collection give S18150 for the 300 mm three-function versions. When you need the number for a plumber or a compliance check, read it from the specification on the exact listing you buy.

The same retailer page states Watermark approval to AS/NZS 3718:2005, and all the Meir listings state that the showers are Watermark certified. Watermark is the mark that shows the product meets the Australian plumbing standard, and WELS is the water efficiency label.

Finishes and what they are made of

The collection comes in matte black, chrome, champagne, tiger bronze, brushed nickel and shadow gunmetal. The listings name the process, and it differs by finish. The tiger bronze, brushed nickel and shadow listings state a PVD finish, and the champagne listings state an electroplated finish. The chrome and matte black listings vary, so read the specification on the one you choose. The rail is solid brass. A retailer help page calls PVD significantly harder and more durable than traditional plating, and a retailer page for the brushed nickel version describes its PVD coating as wear-resistant.

The process decides how you clean it, so check it before you buy. For finish-led browsing, see chrome showers, black showers, brushed nickel showers, champagne showers, bronze showers and gunmetal showers. Match the finish across the parts you can see: the rail, the mixer and the other fittings should share a tone. A retailer guide advises matching the arm's finish to the tapware for a unified look.

How high the rail should be

The height guides land close together. A fixed wall rose sits 2000 to 2100 mm above the finished floor to the centre of the arm outlet, and 2100 to 2200 mm for a tall household. The top of a rail sits about 1800 to 1900 mm up, and a wall mixer about 1000 to 1100 mm. For a rain head, a manufacturer guide asks for a gap of 20 cm or more above the user's head. Retail guides also say to confirm the heights at rough-in, before tiling.

For a gooseneck rail the rose is carried by the rail, so the rail's mounting height sets the rose height. Measure from the finished floor to where the centre of the rose will sit, and make sure the 300 mm face clears the head of the tallest user with room to spare. A diverter system needs two outlets at different heights if the water comes in at two points, so tell the plumber before the linings go up.

Pressure, flow and the star rating

Every set here is rated 3 star at 9 litres per minute on both the overhead and the hand shower, and the listings state an operating pressure of 150 to 500 kPa. To check pressure without a gauge, time a 10 litre bucket under the shower. Under 60 seconds is good, and large overhead heads are not advised below about 200 kPa.

Two common questions have short answers. The most efficient head is the one whose listing shows the best WELS star and the lowest litres per minute that you can live with, so compare those two figures and not the name. A head that gives the most pressure does not exist as a product, because a manufacturer guide says a high-pressure style head changes the nozzle design to feel stronger and cannot increase mains pressure. One buying guide puts the saving from 9 to 7.5 litres per minute at more than 5,000 litres of water a year. It also warns that some instantaneous gas hot water systems need a higher flow to fire and can struggle with low-flow heads. These sets run at 9 litres per minute, which suits most systems.

How to clean a gooseneck set

The maker's product page says to clean with a soft cloth and warm soapy water and to avoid chemical-based or harsh cleaners and rough scourers. It adds that filters and aerators should be cleaned regularly, and that quality water softeners and filters help in hard-water areas. A separate cleaning guide gives a schedule: clean the rose monthly if your water is hard, and every two to three months if your water is soft, and wipe it after each shower. For a fixed rose, tie a sturdy plastic bag of warm water with a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid over it, soak for 30 to 60 minutes, rinse, scrub the holes with a toothbrush and dry with a soft cloth.

The same guide advises against vinegar on modern heads, and says it is acceptable only on standard chrome or plastic. It lists matte black, brushed nickel, gunmetal and other PVD or electroplated finishes as ones to keep acid away from, because acid can cause discolouration or peeling. Signs of scale are weak pressure, uneven or changing flow, spray in odd directions and blocked nozzle holes.

Fitting a gooseneck set

A rail set is a plumber's job, not a swap. The inlet position, the mixer, the fixing points and the height all have to be right. The comparable rail from another maker states that installation must be done by a licensed plumber to Australian Standards, and the Meir listings give 650 mm between the fixing points and include a fixing kit. Fix into solid backing, since a 300 mm rose and a full hose add weight at the end of the neck.

In Western Australia the building regulator lets an owner or occupier maintain, repair or replace a shower head, but other water supply plumbing work needs a licensed plumber or permit holder. The other states have their own rules. Replacing a rose on the rail is a head swap. Turn the water off at the shower valve and unscrew the old head anticlockwise. Clean the threads, wrap new thread seal tape clockwise two to three times, hand-tighten, give it one gentle turn with a wrench and check for leaks.

What is in the box

  • The combination rail shower with the overhead rose.
  • A fixing kit.
  • The installation instructions.
  • A 68 mm threaded adapter, as the listings state.

The box list does not name a mixer, taps or an extra arm. Treat them as not included, and buy them with the set so the finish matches.

How to choose a Meir gooseneck set

  1. Find where the water comes in, from above or from below, and tell the plumber.
  2. Choose the rose: 200 mm for modest pressure or a small enclosure, 300 mm for strong pressure and room.
  3. Pick the hand shower: single function for simplicity, three function for cleaning and rinsing.
  4. Select the mixer or taps in the same finish.
  5. Check the projection of 452 mm or 502 mm against the width of the enclosure.
  6. Check the finish process, PVD or electroplated, since that sets how you clean it.
  7. Book a licensed plumber for the rail, and confirm the heights at rough-in.

Where the water enters and how wide the enclosure is decide whether a gooseneck set works, and the rose size and finish follow from those two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rail shower and why is it popular in Australian bathrooms?

A rail shower (also called a slider rail shower or shower rail kit) includes a hand shower mounted on an adjustable rail, allowing users to slide the shower head up or down to their preferred height. Rail showers are among the most practical and versatile shower options available, they suit users of different heights, are ideal for bathing children, and are easy to use for rinsing down shower walls. They are widely used in family bathrooms across Australia.

What length shower rail do I need?

Standard shower rails in Australia are typically 600mm or 900mm in length. A 600mm rail is compact and suited to smaller showers, while a 900mm rail gives greater height adjustment range, ideal for households with users of varying heights. The rail is installed vertically on the shower wall, and the hand shower clips onto a holder that slides along the rail.

What is the flow rate of a rail shower, and does it need to meet WELS standard

In Australia, all shower heads including those sold as part of rail shower kits must carry a WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) rating. Most Australian rail showers achieve a 3-star WELS rating with a flow rate of 9L/min or less. Some water-saving models reach 4 stars. A lower flow rate doesn't necessarily mean a weaker shower, modern shower heads use air-injection technology to maintain pressure while reducing water use.

What is a rail shower with overhead and how does it work?

A rail shower with overhead shower combines a fixed overhead shower head at the top of the rail with a sliding hand shower below. A diverter valve (either integrated into the rail or fitted separately at the mixer) allows you to switch water flow between the overhead and the hand shower. This combination delivers the best of both worlds, the immersive feel of a rain shower with the flexibility of a hand shower.

What mixer do I need for a rail shower with overhead shower?

You need a shower mixer with a diverter function, either a built-in diverter on the mixer body, a separate diverter valve, or a combination shower outlet that manages both functions. Consult your plumber during the rough-in stage to ensure the water outlets are positioned correctly for the rail and overhead positions. The Blue Space stocks complete combination rail-and-overhead shower sets from brands including Phoenix, Meir, and Caroma.
