Bathroom Heating and Ventilation Buying Guide

A bathroom presents a specific heating challenge that other rooms don't: it needs to manage moisture as well as temperature. A heater that warms the air but does nothing about steam still leaves a bathroom feeling damp, while ventilation without warmth can make a bathroom feel colder than it actually is. The most comfortable bathrooms generally combine all three fixtures, towel rail, floor heating and exhaust fan, rather than relying on just one.

Heated towel rails

A heated towel rail warms towels between uses, which also has the effect of drying them faster and reducing residual dampness in the room, since a damp towel left to air-dry adds moisture back into the same space an exhaust fan is trying to clear.

Exhaust fans

A bathroom with underfloor heating and a heated towel rail but no adequate extraction, for instance, will still develop condensation and lingering humidity, since neither heating fixture manages moisture directly.

Where possible, it's worth coordinating these systems on a shared timer or smart control, so the room warms ahead of use and the exhaust fan runs for a set period afterwards, rather than relying on separate manual switches for each.

Choosing the right combination for your bathroom

The right combination depends on the bathroom's size, layout and how it's used. A small ensuite with limited wall space may prioritise underfloor heating and a compact exhaust fan over a larger towel rail. A family bathroom with heavier daily use benefits from a larger heated towel rail for towel capacity, paired with a stronger extraction rate to manage the higher humidity load from more frequent showers.
