Shower Niches

Shower niches are recessed shelves in the cavity of a shower. A shower niche is perfect for de-cluttering your shower and keeping all your haircare and body products in a nice 'nook'. Our top styling top for shower niches is to keep your products the same style and design.

What is a shower niche?

A shower niche is a practical and stylish location for all our necessities. It's a recessed compartment in your shower that allows you to have storage space for things like shampoo, soap, and other personal care items. It's a great way to keep your shower area organized and clutter-free.

Shower niches can be built into the wall during construction or remodeling, or they can be added later with more effort. They can be any size or shape, but they're typically rectangular or square, and they're often lined with the same material as the rest of the shower to create a seamless look.

They can be a focal point of the shower design, especially when they are tiled with a contrasting color or unique tile shape. Some people also use them to add decorative elements to their showers, like small plants or decorative bottles.

How to install shower niche

Installing a shower niche involves some construction work, so it's important to have this work done by qualified trades. Here's a guide to the steps they will undertake to install a shower niche:

Choose the location and size - it should be convenient to reach but not in a place where it will be hit by water directly. Also, consider the size of the niche. It should be large enough to hold your products but not so large that it dominates the shower.

Mark the area - once you've decided on the location, your tradesman will use a level and a pencil to mark the area where they will cut into the wall making sure the marked area is level and straight.

Cut the opening - using a reciprocating saw or a utility knife, a cut will be made along the lines marked being careful not to cut any studs, plumbing, or electrical wires.

Frame the niche - if any studs have been cut, the niche will need to be framed. Then a bottom and top for the niche will be cut and installed.

Installation - there are pre-made shower niche inserts available that vastly simplify fitting into the opening. They will be attached according to the manufacturer's instructions. If building a custom niche, your tradesman will need to install a backing board in the back of the niche, then line the sides and bottom with backing board as well.

Waterproofing will be done by applying a waterproof membrane over the backing board. This is a crucial step to prevent water damage.

Tiling will be completed after the waterproofing is done starting with the back wall, then the sides and finally the bottom. The tile adhesive needs to be suitable for wet areas.

Grouting and sealing will be done after the tile adhesive has dried. Once the grout has dried, a sealer will usually be applied to protect the niche from water and mildew.
