Colour and finish look different depending on lighting, room orientation and the materials already in a space. A tile or cabinet colour that reads one way on a screen can shift noticeably once it's held against an existing floor, wall colour or fixture, which is why viewing a physical sample in the room it will actually be used in is one of the more reliable steps in a renovation.
Why samples matter
Samples remove much of the guesswork from choosing a finish. Natural light, artificial lighting and the surrounding materials in a room all affect how a colour or texture reads, so a sample viewed at different times of day gives a more accurate picture than a single product photo.
Laying tile samples beside cabinetry, holding tapware finishes against a vanity colour, or comparing a benchtop sample under both natural and artificial light are all practical ways to test whether a combination works before committing to a full order. Building a small moodboard from physical samples makes it easier to compare finishes side by side and catch a mismatch early, when it's still a minor adjustment rather a costly one.
Tile samples
Tile samples cover a broad range of colours, textures, finishes and shapes, from soft, coastal-leaning neutrals through to bolder feature tiles. Since tiles interact directly with the flooring, walls and fixtures around them, a physical sample is generally the most reliable way to judge how a specific tile will actually read in a given room.
Tile samples are cut from the same tile that will be ordered, though some variation can occur between production batches, particularly with natural-look and handmade-style tiles, where texture and colour aren't intended to be perfectly uniform.

Cabinet and benchtop samples
Cabinet finish and benchtop samples are available from brands including ADP, Timberline and Ingrain, covering timber tones, textured finishes and stone-look surfaces. Since cabinetry and benchtops typically make up the largest visible surface area in a kitchen or bathroom, testing a sample against existing flooring or wall colours is worth doing before finalising a selection.
Tapware finish samples
Tapware finish samples let popular finishes, brushed nickel, brushed brass, chrome and gunmetal, be compared directly from brands including Phoenix, Meir and Caroma.
