Bathroom Heaters Buying Guide

Excess moisture is the underlying issue both fixtures are designed to solve. Left unmanaged, humidity from showers and baths settles on walls and ceilings, leading to peeling paint, musty odours and mould developing in grout lines over time. A wall heater and exhaust fan used together address both sides of the problem, warmth for comfort and extraction for moisture control, rather than treating either in isolation.

Wall heaters

Wall-mounted heaters have a slim profile that fits into a corner or above a doorway, directing heat exactly where it's needed rather than warming the whole room evenly. Many models include a programmable timer, allowing the room to be preheated before use, and a thermostatic control to hold a consistent temperature rather than cycling on and off unevenly.

In humid or coastal homes, a heater also plays a secondary role by reducing the amount of moisture lingering in the air after a shower, which helps limit the conditions mould needs to establish itself on grout or ceiling surfaces.

Exhaust fans

An exhaust fan's job is to pull humid air out of the bathroom before it condenses on cooler surfaces. A few specifications matter more than brand or styling when choosing one:

  • Extraction rate measured in litres per second (L/s), determines how much air the fan moves. A small ensuite typically needs around 25 L/s, while a larger bathroom generally needs 50 L/s or more
  • Noise measured in sones, is worth checking against the household's tolerance for background noise; models under 1.5 sones run quietly enough to barely be noticed
  • Motor type affects running cost over time. DC motors use considerably less power than older AC motors for a comparable extraction rate

How heaters and fans work together

A heater and exhaust fan generally perform better as a coordinated pair than as separate, independently timed fixtures. The heater warms the room ahead of use, while the fan clears steam once showering is finished, but running the fan for too long in winter can pull warmth out of the room along with the moisture.

Placement and wall design

  • Wall heaters perform best installed near the shower or bath, where warmth is needed most immediately. They should be positioned away from towels, to avoid a fire risk, and clear of direct water exposure
  • Exhaust fans work best positioned directly above the area where steam accumulates, generally above the shower or bath. Bathrooms with higher ceilings need a fan with a stronger extraction rate to clear the larger air volume effectively.

Choosing for Australian conditions

Coastal humidity and cold inland winters place different demands on bathroom heating and ventilation, and products in this collection are chosen with both scenarios in mind, from corrosion resistance in salt-exposed coastal air through to reliable heating performance in colder climates.

Completing the bathroom

Heater and fan placement is easiest to plan alongside the bathroom's electrical and ceiling layout, so it's worth confirming this early in a renovation rather than after tiling is complete. The Blue Space's Lighting and Tiles collections are worth reviewing at the same time, since ceiling fixtures, including exhaust fans and heaters, need to be planned as part of the same electrical layout.
