Five Must Have Items For Your Outdoor Space

Easy to Maintain Backyard Ideas

Whether it's Winter or Summer, your outdoor area deserves a makeover to keep it usable all year round! Turn your outdoor space into an entertaining haven, complete with simple additions such as appropriate seating, lighting, shade and warmth!

When it comes to revamping your outdoor space, you do not have to worry about expensive fit outs or digging out an underground pool. Reclaiming your backyard can be an enjoyable and affordable task, and will lead to more time spent outside with friends and family.

Backyard Ideas

While there are a number of solutions to creating the perfect backyard space, we have determined our top 5 must haves, suitable no matter the budget, to keep your home inviting all year long.

1. Backyard Seating

To keep things inviting and warm, you will want to find outdoor seating that compliments and fits your space. Depending on the size of your backyard, you can choose from an array of different styles of furniture. For spaces with more room to work with, consider an outdoor lounge complete with an outdoor ottoman, doubling as another seat or bench space. We also love the introduction of smaller conversation pits where possible. This is perfect for a classic outdoor setting, with two chairs and a smaller coffee table in between. These areas are perfect for those slow mornings or an afternoon as the sun goes down.

Tips for Buying Outdoor Furniture

  • Opt for a classic style that will remain timeless with your home, or any other place should you decide to move.
  • Comfort is key. If your new furniture is not comfortable, you won't use it. It’s as simple as that!
  • Do you need weatherproof furniture? Is your outdoor patio fully enclosed or is there a risk your furniture will feel it in the wet months?
  • Consider the type of entertainment you want to hold. Do you need a full dining setting, or a few different conversation areas?

2. Backyard Lighting

A staple no matter the size of your space, backyard lighting is integral to ensure you get full use of your space. Having an accessible outdoor area will make all the difference, and create an inviting space no matter the time of day. Backyard lighting comes in many different forms, but is definitely one of our must haves for backyard entertaining. From a more practical sense, we recommend installing weather resistance downlights, or ceiling fans with lights that can be positioned in an outdoor patio.

Another option is to install floodlights in areas that require full light coverage. Floodlights are a fantastic solution for any parts of your house that are typically hard to light, or that you might access throughout the night such as to empty your bins. Here at The Blue Space, we offer a range of lighting options to ensure your outdoor area is ready no matter the occasion. Another staple for your garden is the use of an RGB light kit, available with smart home technology so that you can customise the colour of your outdoor space!

3. Barbeque Considerations

Arguably one of the most iconic staples in an Aussie backyard, is the BBQ. However, this isn't to say every outdoor space needs one. Perfect for Summer lunches and family events, BBQs can however become bulky and inconvenient if you have a smaller space to work with. So, we recommend weighing out the pros and cons of owning your own BBQ before you decide whether or not this will actually become a staple in your home.

Pros

  • Perfect for entertaining. An easy way to serve meals and fast too!
  • A conversation starter. While this might seem like an odd pro, it definitely helps to get the party started when a few dads come over.
  • Delicious food. Cooking food on a BBQ instantly adds an extra element and will leave your friends and family wanting more.

Cons

  • Can take up a lot of space. While smaller Weber BBQs are readily available, a large freestanding BBQ is more ideal for entertaining purposes but will take up a permanent spot in your yard.
  • Difficult to clean. Once all the fun is done, cleaning up a BBQ is often the last thing you want to do - however, it should not be forgotten!
  • Can be expensive! If you are to get a BBQ, we would definitely recommend investing in a top quality and brand.

4. Shaded Areas

Having ample shade is an important factor to creating the perfect outdoor space. On those long summer days where you want to entertain, or simply sit outside and read a book, sun protection is key. If you already have a patio, this will be an easy step for you. Patios are a fantastic space to add furniture under, as well as any lighting or even a ceiling fan where appropriate. This will help keep this area cool and usable during all weather conditions.

For a quicker solution, we recommend investing in a sturdy outdoor umbrella. These are fantastic at providing ample shade, while also being quick and easy to put up and pack away. Large outdoor umbrellas come in a range of shapes, sizes and colours, so it is easy to find one that suits your space.

Another shady area that people often forget is under your trees! If you are on a property that already has some large trees in place, set up seating areas or conversation pits nearby so that you can make use of the natural protection given by large trees.

5. Fire Pits for Warmth

As soon as those Winter months roll in, a new fire pit will be on everyone’s mind. We love incorporating a fire pit or somewhere warm to snuggle up next to in those colder months, and it doesn’t have to be big either! With a range of different fire pits now available, you can find the perfect one to fit your space. One consideration however is to make sure you can safely operate your fire, meaning it is away from any low bearing trees, dry grass or infrastructure.

If you do have a larger space, we recommend setting up a designated space for your fire pit to sit. This ensures only one area of your backyard will ever see any remnants of your fire. This also keeps your backyard in sections which assists in creating continuity and harmony throughout your home.

Once you have found the perfect fire pit, you then need the perfect stools to sit on! For that timeless & rustic look, using tree logs or stumps is a fantastic & relatively inexpensive way to create that classic feeling.
