What is a Maximalist Interior?

In its true essence, maximalist interior design uses ‘things’, ‘collectables’, and decor to tell a story. Maximalism is all about bright colours, contrasting colour combinations, vibrant prints, lots of furniture, beautiful artwork and colourful accessories.

Beware Minimalists, you may be converted!

Maximalist vs Minimalist?

Minimalism has recently been one of the most popular trends, but now there’s a new top trend in town, and it's called Maximalism.

Maximalism is the complete opposite to minimalism. Maximalist interiors have an approach of ‘more is more’, whereas, Minimalist interiors follow a ‘less is more’ approach.

Maximalist home decor allows the colour, shapes, tone and texture do all of the talking. It’s a style that is completely unique, attention grabbing, exciting, vibrant and anything but boring!

Whether you’re wanting a complete maximalist kitchen or bathroom, or you’re just looking to spice up your home in your own way - we’ve got a beautifully curated, interior designer approved collection to help you find your own, individual maximalist meaning.

How to achieve a Maximalist aesthetic:

  • Colour! Lots and lots of colour! Use any colour that you love and create bold contrast with bright paint colour combinations
  • Don’t be afraid to incorporate vibrant patterned wallpaper, tiles and furniture.
  • Fill every inch of an accent wall with artwork - you can have multiple gallery walls - more is more!
  • The maximalist aesthetic is a friend for book lovers! There is no limit to the amount of books you can have on display. Place them on shelves, on the floor, on coffee tables...place them everywhere!
  • The key is to GET CREATIVE! Homes can often be seen as functional, minimal spaces - take this opportunity to be creative to design a maximalist home that oozes personality

Traps to avoid:

  • Avoid having too many bright colours with no blend
  • Don’t over accessorise rooms with hundreds of small accessories
  • Opt out of using too much white - that isn’t the maximalist style!
  • Avoid using different colours in different rooms with no real flow between them - it’s important to keep your rooms somewhat cohesive

Eclectic styling can even be used in a Maximalist space, as more is more with this style, right! Eclectic style interior design pulls different traits from many different styles to create its own look. What better way to include eclectic style decor than in a Maximalist space! Toe the line with your styling choices if you want bold and exciting and mix and match your decor choices to create that unique style that is YOU.
