    REAL STONE

Thinking About Natural Stone Tiles? Here’s the Real Talk.

So. You’re staring at a room in your house. The kitchen, maybe. Or that sad-looking bathroom from the 90s. And you’re thinking, "it's time." You want to do it right. You want something that won’t look dated in five years, something with a bit of substance. And your mind wanders to natural stone.

Good choice.

There’s just something about it. It’s real. It’s solid. Every piece is a one-off, sliced straight from a mountain. Not cooked up in a factory. You’re literally bringing a piece of the planet inside, and that feeling of authenticity is what makes a house feel like a proper home. But let's be real, the whole process can feel like a bit of a maze. That’s where we come in. Forget the confusing jargon. Let's just have a straight-up chat about it, from one Aussie to another. Here at The Blue Space, we reckon choosing tiles should be exciting, not a headache.

So, Where Does This Stuff Actually Work Best?

You can put stone pretty much anywhere, but the trick is picking the right stone for the right job. Let's break it down by room, because that's how we actually plan our renos, right?

Picture your bathroom. You want it to feel like a retreat, not just a place to brush your teeth. This is where stone shines. You could run some beautiful, soft limestone across the floor and up the walls for a seamless, five-star hotel vibe. Or maybe a really dramatic marble for a feature wall behind the vanity. Just a heads up, for bathroom tiles, especially on the floor, you'll want a 'honed' or matte finish. The super-shiny polished stuff looks incredible, but it gets mighty slippery when wet. Safety first, yeah?

Now, the kitchen. This room is the heart of the home and it cops a beating. Constant traffic. Spills. Dropped utensils. You need a floor that can handle it. This is where I'd point you towards the tough guys of the stone world: granite and slate. Granite is almost indestructible; it’s born from cooled lava, so it laughs at high traffic. And slate is a brilliant choice because its natural texture gives you a bit of grip, and its dark, moody colours are great at hiding the odd brekkie crumb. A good set of stone kitchen tiles is a true workhorse.

And don't just think about floors. Stone makes a stunning splashback. Easy to wipe down and looks a million bucks.

What about the rest of the house? For living areas and hallways, a beautiful travertine is hard to beat. It's got this warm, Mediterranean feel to it, full of creamy, beige and tan colours. It connects spaces beautifully and feels amazing underfoot. Especially on a hot summer arvo – natural stone stays beautifully cool. It's a natural air conditioner for your feet. And for the chilly months? It works a treat with underfloor heating. A good set of natural floor tiles is an investment you won't regret.

Even your backyard can get in on the action. Taking stone outside for a patio or around the pool creates a perfect flow from indoors to out. Just grab some proper outdoor tiles with a non-slip finish. Job done.

Shapes, Sizes, and Getting Creative

Okay, you've picked a room. Now, what about the actual tiles? The size and shape you choose can totally change the feel of a space.

A big trend is using large-format tiles. Fewer grout lines make a small room feel bigger and less cluttered. It’s a clever optical illusion. But don't discount the little guys. Small tiles are perfect for creating really interesting details. Think about a shower niche or a splashback. This is where you can have some fun with mosaic tiles. They come on a sheet, so your tiler isn't painstakingly laying each tiny piece. You can get classic little penny rounds for a cool retro vibe, or elegant fish scale tiles that look stunning on a bathroom wall.

The classics are classics for a reason. Simple square tiles always work. And so do rectangle tiles. You might know them as subway tiles, and they're super versatile. Lay them in a brick pattern, stack them vertically for a modern look, or go for a fancy herringbone layout to add a touch of class. Honestly, just changing the layout can make a standard tile look completely custom.

And there are some awesome new shapes popping up. Skinny Kit Kat tiles give amazing texture to a wall, and diamond tiles can create some incredible optical effects. If you really want to make a statement, you could look at some patterned tiles to inject some serious personality. When in doubt, a good all-rounder size like the ones in our medium tiles range is a pretty safe bet for most Aussie homes.

Let’s Talk Colour. And Why No Two Tiles Are the Same.

This is the best part. Because stone is a natural product, the colours are incredible. From the brightest whites to the darkest blacks, there's a stone for every mood. Want your bathroom to feel like a bright, clean sanctuary? Look at white tiles, like a classic Carrara marble with its soft grey veins.

If you're after something modern and versatile, you can't go past grey. Grey tiles are the ultimate neutral – they go with any timber, any tapware colour. It just works. From light grey limestone to deep charcoal slate, it's a can't-go-wrong choice.

For something a bit more dramatic, why not go dark? A floor laid with black tiles, maybe a honed granite, looks incredibly sophisticated. And some stones have the most amazing colour variations running through them. You can find hints of green, deep blue, or even blush pink in some types of marble. A wall of that is basically art.

And if you want warmth, look no further than the earthy tones of travertine or some sandstones. Those rich brown and tan shades make a room feel instantly welcoming. The key thing to remember is that this variation is a feature, not a flaw. It’s the stone’s story. It’s why your floor will be completely yours. Always a good idea to open a few boxes before they’re laid to mix them all up and get a nice, balanced blend of all the tones.

The Boring But Important Stuff: Sealing, Grout, and a Word on Fakes

Right, let’s get the maintenance question out of the way. People get scared of this bit, but they shouldn't. It’s simple. Most stone is a bit porous (like a very dense sponge), so you need to seal it. A sealer is just a liquid that you apply which soaks in and blocks up those tiny pores. This stops spills from staining. Simple as that. You do it when it's installed, and then maybe every few years after. It’s a quick job.

Your choice of grout matters too. That's the stuff that fills the gaps. A matching grout gives a clean, seamless look. A contrasting grout makes every tile pop. We use and recommend a top-quality product like Maxisil Grout to do the job properly. And for the corners and edges, especially in the bathroom, you need a good flexible, mould-resistant silicone. Don’t skimp on this bit; a quality sealant like Maxisil Silicone will prevent headaches down the track.

Now, a quick word on look-alikes. Porcelain tile technology is insanely good now. You can get porcelain that looks just like marble, travertine, or even terracotta. So, what’s the difference? Real stone has a depth and authenticity you can't quite replicate. It ages and gets a patina. It's the real deal. Our marble-look tiles and travertine-look tiles are fantastic, but they are a different product. Porcelain is basically maintenance-free. You don’t need to seal it, and it's incredibly resistant to stains and scratches. If you've got a super busy family or you're on a tight budget, a good look-alike, like our terracotta-look tiles, can be a brilliant, stress-free option. There’s no right or wrong answer; it’s just about what works for you and your home.

At the end of the day, choosing natural stone is an investment in making your home feel good. It’s about creating a space with character and a story. It has a timeless quality that will look just as good in a decade as it does today. So have a browse of our full range of tiles, including our incredible wall tiles, and if you get stuck, just give us a yell. We’re here to help. No worries.
