The best spouts for kitchen and laundry applications are upswept, where the arm goes up and comes back down. This allows for more movement in the tub.

Spouts can also come attached to a backplate with a mixer if you don't want a separate mixer component.
If you are wanting a spout for a shower/bath application, don't forget that the mixer you choose needs to be a diverter mixer to allow you to switch between the spout and shower.
