Create a Mid Century Modern Home

A mid century modern home brings a clean and neat feeling due to its relaxed, yet tailored design. It’s a real classic that refers to the resurgence of design trends that span from the late 1930’s to the early 1960’s, but in a fresher and more modern way.

It’s hard to narrow down very specific features for the mid century style as it has its hands in every pot in terms of the shapes, textures and colours.

The characteristics of mid century modern style can include timber accents - such as flooring and vanities, and a vibrant tile or paint colour, or on the other end, minimalist features that include clean lines and cool colours - both work!

This style can be as dramatic and sleek as it can be natural and subtle, it all depends on which way you want to take it!

How to get the Mid Century modern look:

  • Embrace wood panelling - when constructed well it can be a beautiful addition to any home
  • Add some modern flair with your lighting - oblong, wall-mounted lights are sleek and work beautifully on either side of your vanity mirror
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with Tint paint colours - pink, teal, olive green, orange, just to name a few!
  • Implement a major tile statement - let your tiles steal the show!
  • Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors! - Choose between full length, porthole, arched or asymmetric!
  • Select matte finishes for your tapware

Traps to avoid:

  • Avoid clutter where you can - don’t over accessorise
  • Don’t create too many design statements in one space - a little goes a long way!
  • Avoid making the mistake of designing your home to be too angular
  • Don’t use too much of one wood tone or colour - make sure you explore a variety of finishes for your bathroom vanity, timber flooring and blinds - you don’t need to go matchy matchy!
